In practice…

Sakura for Future Generations provides financial support:

  • to any initiative (individual or organization) able to demonstrate strong and relevant links with higher education institutions;
  • over a period of 3 years, up to a maximum of €42,500 per year
    (with the possibility of extending financial support for an additional 2 years, under certain conditions).

  • Call for projects guidelines(NL)

Why this programme?

Sakura for Future Generations aims to support initiatives that:

  • significantly increase the number of women who successfully and with greater confidence navigate the transition from the start of a PhD to establishing a long-term academic career
  • go beyond individual support for women by addressing real levers for structural transformation

The ULB has been working for many years to promote gender equality at the university, particularly with regard to academic careers (permanent staff). However, for this work to remain effective, it is essential to continue ‘feeding the pipeline’ at earlier stages of the academic career by addressing the obstacles women face during their PhD, postdoctoral work, and in securing a permanent position. Funding from the Sakura Fund enables us to equip the Delta project with the necessary human resources to implement new and innovative measures to this end.

The steps

1. Call for applications

2027: potential launch of a new call for projects

2. Selection of winners

A selection committee reviews the applications and selects between two and four winning projects. The committee is composed of members of the Sakura Fund’s management committee and independent experts with relevant expertise for the call.

3. Peer learning sessions

These “peer learning” sessions are designed to build a true community of practice, learn from one another, and maintain a high level of motivation. They take place twice a year.

They help ensure sound governance and responsible management of funds.
